The Straw That Broke...

The Straw That Broke...

In ancient times, bricks were made of straw mixed with mud. They stacked the straw on top of the camels and led them to the mud to perform the task. I imagine that in order to save time, they put more and more and more straw on the camels over time, until finally the unthinkable happened: the camel broke. Ouch.

One straw too many. But what was the cause of the tragedy? That single straw? Or the building up over time of many little straws? Well obviously the phrase itself tends to suggest that we blame the individual straw for the ensuing problem, but I encourage you to look at all the facts, particularly the one that a single straw by itself isn’t capable of breaking anything, particularly the back of this majestic animal.

When it comes to the pain that brought you to your chiropractic appointment for the first time, it’s not uncommon to blame a certain event or moment in time. This would give the impression that if a moment in time was all it took for the pain to happen, then perhaps another moment in time, or say a single chiropractic adjustment, could reverse the entirety of the problem.

Sometimes a single adjustment could help the pain, but not likely solve the problem. The problem of a degenerated spine that has progressed to the point of pain could very well take an ongoing plan of care to help restore your spine to as near normal as possible. It may seem confusing, but your problem is a culmination of stresses and neglect, many “straws” over time, not just the single “straw” that pushed you over the edge.

Keep this in mind when it comes to choosing a plan of care for yourself and you’re tempted to ask your chiropractor, “How did this happen?” The simple answer is likely that there were too many straws placed on your back without taking timely care of your structure.

And timely care is regular care. Your regular chiropractic care. The care that is required to help you stay strong and healthy by most importantly keeping your back strong and healthy.
