How Can I Be Sore After?

Sometimes when people get started with chiropractic care, there is the potential that they might feel some soreness after the adjustment when what they expect is to be feeling more immediate relief.  How could that be?

When you go to the gym for the first time in a while, and you pick up some weights, jump on a treadmill, or attend a class, more often than not you feel more soreness the following day.  Why?  Because you are not as healthy as you should be. You have muscles that are attempting to strengthen up and ligaments that are tightening up and this can cause some tenderness until the muscles and ligaments regain some integrity.  Very seldom does someone point a finger at the weights, treadmill, or workout class and say that it hurt them and is therefore bad for you.

When you attempt to start to eat better after having accustomed yourself to eating poorly for some time, more often than not you will feel worse before you feel better.  Why?  Because you are not as healthy as you should be and your body is probably full of toxins and not used to processing a great deal more fiber and nutrition. This can sometimes cause the potential for moments of detoxification, the process of your body getting rid of the bad toxins that it stores up over the years from bad, processed foods.  Very seldom does someone point a finger at vegetables or fruits and say that they hurt them and therefore they are bad for you.

Why might soreness happen with your chiropractic care?  When you get started with care there is a good chance that your posture has been compromised due to your spine not holding itself in a healthy position.  Your range of motion is not as good as it should be.  Restoring that motion and position will involve engaging postural muscles that may not have been doing their job for some time.  Muscles that haven’t been used properly and joints that haven’t been moving properly can have the potential of having some soreness during the healing process.

The good news, however, is it won’t last for long!  In all of these examples, if you stick with your plan, you will soar, not “sore," to the other side and begin enjoying a healthier you.
