One Step At A Time

Home

Recently, I had a wonderful conversation with a patient.  I was inquiring as to what athletic events she is doing yet this year. She shared she had a few triathlons on the docket for this summer.

There was so much joy listening to her talk about her current training, which started many years ago with just a simple walking program, a program she started with just a friend or two. They eventually built the time and distance they were walking to miles calculated per week. Then they got to the point of participating in regional marathons where they would just walk the entire distance with friends, all the time training and practicing for the next event.

And now here she is, years from those moments. Years from taking those first steps towards a healthier and more active lifestyle and speaking of participating in several triathlons in such a way that it’s just what you do.

Let me ask you the reader right now. What athletic events do you have in the plans this summer? Some of you may be responding with disbelief. You know full well that you fit the term deconditioned, “a prolonged state of non-use.” This is when muscles get sloppy and any effort is sure to cause some level of initial pain and discomfort, which no one enjoys, but seriously…the movement is necessary.

Moving your muscles and joints is what your body is designed to do. You were not born to be a stationary and immobile object. You were born with the most complex and amazing joint system known to man. To get the most out of it, you need to use it, and you need to take care of it.

I repeat: to get the most out of your spine, your muscles, your body, you need to use it dynamically and daily, and you need to take care of it.

Exercising seems daunting to many, but keep in mind the conversation at the top of the page. She started by walking, and that required just one step at a time, creating a goal and moving forward. After some time your goal will get bigger and bigger. Your pace will likely pick up as well. Before you know it, you will be doing activities and events that you never thought you could do. It is so possible.

When it comes to taking care of your structure, it involves keeping a regularly scheduled relationship with your chiropractor to make sure your spine and structure stays healthy in segmental motion and alignment. Regular adjustments keep your body able.

Remember, it all starts with one step. Just keep moving forward from there. One step at a time.
