At state fairs around where I grew up, there is an event at which two strong and healthy draft horses are linked together with a harness of sorts. This harness is attached to a large, heavy sleigh carrying at least 1500 pounds of concrete blocks. It’s aptly called a horse pull, and the trick I’m told is to train the horses to pull at the exact same time and in the exact same direction together. That’s when the magic happens.
As I’ve been told, it’s when the horses don’t pull at the same time and in the same direction that efficiency is lost. They can’t pull as much weight. In fact, they might not even finish the event. Make no mistake, these are strong, capable animals. Alone they are capable of pulling several hundred pounds from point A to point B. Together however, they are capable of pulling several thousands of pounds, easily ten times the amount that they can pull alone, if and only if they pull together…at the same time and in the same direction.
Here you are at your chiropractor’s office. You have a desire to get from point A to point B. You have accepted that you can’t get there on your own. What is point A? A body you can’t trust right now. It’s not working the way you want it to. There might even be pain involved. You want to get to point B. What is point B? Your body functioning in good health. It’s your body becoming trustworthy again, doing what you ask of it without complaint or dysfunction. That is what you desire.
There is something to learn from the horse pull event in regard to your care. Many times people come to their chiropractor thinking “I’m going to give my health to the chiropractor and see what they can do with it,” somehow thinking that if they don’t see the results they would like to see or as fast as they anticipate, that the chiropractor has then “failed” them. This is a very unhealthy way of thinking about one’s care.
A healthy way of approaching the care you chose is to get engaged in your care. Make your appointments ahead of time. Make up any missed appointments. Listen to your chiropractor as they are attempting to educate you and others about steps of good health. Ask pertinent questions related to your health. Don’t waste your time talking about the weather or the latest sports scores. Your appointment is an important time to better your health.
While you are doing that, your chiropractor is going to attempt to stay focused on using the best adjusting skills they can to help your body regain healthy structure and alignment. They will also be constantly working to educate you in the myriad of areas on which you can focus in regards to your health.
When you and your chiropractor pull as a team – at the same time and in the same direction – you will find that getting from point A to point B becomes easier, making striving for your health goals just that much more efficient.
