Completely Broken

Go to YouTube and search for “Katie Hansen Skydiver.” You will see a video of the number one female skydiver in the world, strutting her stuff in the sky. You can’t watch her accolades without your adrenaline starting to flow a little more abundantly.

What you won’t hear on that video is the amazing journey to where she is today. This last weekend I had the opportunity to listen to her share her story, a story of her rising through the ranks of the world of skydiving, until a moment just over two years ago when tragedy struck.

She was riding her motorcycle home on a dirt road. The truck in front of her was going 45mph on a 50mph dirt road. She went to pass on the left. At that very moment the driver in front of her slowed down quickly to make a left into a driveway. She had no option but to quickly try to veer to the right and attempt to dodge his turn. She clipped his rear fender and it caused her to crash. Her bike went careening while she bounced on her side until her leg slammed into the side of a mailbox, bringing her to a stop.

She was taken to the hospital where she was treated for twelve broken ribs, a collapsed lung and seven broken vertebrae. She underwent emergency surgeries to repair what they could and she was released several days later in a body brace. She underwent many therapies and a month later returned to the surgeon with one question on her mind: “When can I get back to skydiving?”

His answer enraged her when he said, “You will never go skydiving again.”

Skydiving was the most important thing in her life. She went on to say that she went to other doctors who gave her a different answer, and one of those doctors was her chiropractor.

Now some people might gawk at the thought of chiropractic care benefiting someone recovering with a case as serious as this.  But in fact, applying specific adjustments to help keep the spine and structure as healthy as possible will help them heal as well as possible. Katie’s story is just one of those cases.

She closed her story by sharing that she’s “twice the skydiver she ever was before her accident.” That’s powerful. She significantly credits chiropractic with helping her get back into the sky.

What injuries, disease, or degeneration has your body undergone? What are the most important activities on your life? Have you been communicating this to your chiropractor? Have you been following a plan of corrective care for your spine and structure?

If you have the perseverance and the passion, the desire and commitment, maybe you too can find yourself years from now standing in front of an audience sharing your story…

“Today, I’m twice the __________ I was before I started chiropractic care.”

You fill in the blank. Now that’s a powerful story.
