How Could This Happen?

Home

A patient who hadn’t been in for some time came back to the office recently and she was hurting! As she gingerly made her way to the adjusting table, we started to investigate what happened to lead to the painful predicament she had found herself in. She shared that she merely did a very simple activity which caused a little strain that turned into a big problem. She couldn’t understand how something so small could lead to this much pain. She shared that since her last time in the office, life has been good with little to no pain, but now this. She wanted to know how this could happen.

As the adjustment commenced I took her back to her childhood and reminded her of a certain block-stacking game. Playing by yourself or with others, the goal is to see how tall the tower can stretch by borrowing blocks from the bottom and placing them on the top. This takes quite a bit of balance and precision. It can actually be quite fun to see how tall you can stretch the tower. However, there does become a moment in the game when you can’t stretch the tower any further.  Balance is lost, and the tower inevitably collapses into a big pile of blocks on the table. At that point, you must take the time to set all the blocks up again in order to play.

When most people initiate chiropractic care, it’s usually because they are a “pile of blocks” on the adjustment table. Their spine has been so beaten up with a combination of neglect and traumas that it has reached a point where balance has been lost. Something had to give, and they are now either hurting or something in their body isn’t working as it should. The rebuilding process continues with every adjustment in the plan to restore their health.

When good and close-to-normal balance is restored to their spine and nervous system, they are usually happier and feeling younger than they have in years! They are again ready to “play.” Yet, sometimes they get distracted from their structural health and end up stretching their appointments further and further apart in time. Days become weeks. Weeks become months. Months become years. Somewhere in there, the stress accumulates and the simplest of “moves” could cause them to topple. That’s when hopefully they remember how helpful chiropractic was in the beginning.

But for the elite, they will see that regular maintenance of their structure is like giving their chiropractor a chance to keep all their “blocks in order.” A chance to keep their spine and nervous system as healthy as possible.  A chance to help minimize or eliminate their chance of toppling when playing the game.

Stick with your chiropractic care. It’s your health. Don’t stretch yourself too thin.
