It’s that time of year. The parties are set. The drinks are arranged. The dates are being made. Some say it will be the party of the year. Romances are kindled. Even some proposals are being planned. It’s about to be New Year’s Eve.
It’s time for change...yet again.
Some of us will get nostalgic. We will look at pictures of this year, reminiscing about the vacations taken, the growth spurts of the children, the graduations, the accomplishments, even the trials. Some changes we welcomed, some we will miss, and some we are glad to be done with. But we are not done yet. As the new year starts to unfold, the date on our calendars isn’t the only thing to change. You are standing at the door. Opportunity is knocking. What will you do now?
Some naysayers will say they avoid making resolutions because they don’t work. Let me remind you that a resolution is merely “a firm decision to do or not to do something.” I daresay the one aspect in that definition that decides if the resolution has traction is whether or not your decision is firm. The best way I can advise being firm in your decision is twofold: write your list of resolutions down, and then place that list somewhere you can see it and be reminded of those decisions daily.
In fact, I would suggest that you make resolutions in every category of your life. I will borrow from Zig Ziglar’s Wheel of Life, where he suggests focusing on seven key areas: intellectual, family, social, career, financial, spiritual, and lastly, physical. My encouragement is to set written goals in each of these areas. By recognizing the importance of each of these areas and creating a few specific resolutions in each, you’ll have you something to strive for in the new year.
Don’t beat yourself up at the end if you don’t reach any goal in particular, because you will certainly be closer to a goal written than a goal never stated when all is said and done. And that leads to a healthier you.
And speaking of health, that fits nicely in the category of physical. If you stop to think about it, your physical health really is the linchpin in the whole equation. Lose your health and you can’t tackle any of the categories. Have spectacular health and you have the strength, wellbeing, clarity and energy to tackle not only any trial you come across, but achieve any goal placed in front of you.
Write your resolutions down. Place them in daily view. And may this next year truly be “Out with the old, and in with the new.”
